Gaia was the Cosmic Spirit of Earth, but gave her life to create the Beast Folk a century before the show began. However, some say that she will return one day, reincarnated as a mortal.

Backstory

Gaia was born after the first Cosmic Disruption, seperated from her sister, the Moon Spirit Cyana. She would seclude herself in the core of the Earth, focusing on her job of creating life. After the Meteor wiped out most prehistoric life, she would create more again, this time with help. This help came from the Sun Spirit Iscara, who in their recklessness used their whole being to create the primal mortal Elves. Gaia afterward focuses on syphoning her magic slowly, allowing primal life to evolve at a slower and healthier pace for her. This led to the three ancient people: Ancient Humans/Cavemen, Sun Elves (created by Iscara), and the Harran.

During the Split, Gaia played an important part helping Chronoa seal the area of Vacuo’s escape and hiding the existence of the Harran.

A century before the pilot happens, a grief-stricken and heartbroken (by humanity’s latest conflict) Gaia has had enough and no longer wants to be Earth’s guardian spirit. Thus, she created the Beast People, having chosen certain fauna to evolve. It was her way of giving her planet one last chance. They would protect the planet and live with it. These were Lizards, Birds, Bees, Wolves, Rabbits, and Chinchillas. She followed Iscara’s suit, using up almost all her energy to do create the various races. The last of her life meanwhile, went into her last creation, her reincarnation. Only then, did she fade into Rei’s arms and passed on.

However, the Chennai have a prophecy. They believe that Gaia will be reincarnated as a mortal - specifically, a copper-furred Chennai.

Powers

Gaia had the typical Cosmic Spirit powers, including powers of creation, an ethereal form, and a larger energy/essence supply. It’s likely she also had the powers of growth, due to being Mother Earth.

Personality

Not much is known about her personality so far, although according to Rei, she cared for Earth’s creatures as if they were her children, implying she may have had some motherly traits.
